Estonia: membership of Kaitseliit up by 1,000 on year

Membership of the Estonian Kaitseliit and its special organizations has increased by more that 1,000 compared with the previous year.

As of this January the membership of Kaitseliit is 13,814, 828 more compared with the beginning of the previous year. The membership of the Kaitseliit women's arm climbed from 1,747 to 1,834 and that of Young Eagles from 3,094 to 3,313. The number of Home Daughters fell slightly from 3,574 to 3,547, Tanel Rutman, press officer for Kaitseliit told BNS.

The biggest growth was in the Saaremaa, Harju and Parnu companies, respectively from 441 to 542, from 1,351 to 1,447 and from 1,323  to 1,391. The companies with the biggest number of active members  were those of Tallinn with 1,983, the Harju County Company with 1,447, the Parnu County Company with 1,380 and the Alutaguse Company with 1,001 members.

Of  Estonian citizens more than 15 years old 4.1 percent are in Kaitseliit and in its women's arm and four percent of the citizens of Hiiu County. Tallinn is at the bottom of the list with one percent.

At the end of 1939 Kaitseliit had 42,673 members, and along with special organizations Kaitseliit then had 99,000 Estonian citizens in its membership.
