A heat and power cogeneration unit using mixed solid household waste as fuel has been completed at the Eesti Energia power plant at Iru just outside Tallinn and will be opened on Tuesday, June 18.

The completion of the waste incinerating unit marks the end of large-scale depositing of waste in landfills in Estonia and in the future more than half of the mixed household waste generated in the country will be used in the production of electricity and heat, the state-owned energy group Eesti Energia said.

The total size of the investment is 105 million euros.
