Estonia's own airline providing direct air connections to Europe and elsewhere is a big asset and if supporting the company conforms to valid rules it's a good idea, European Commission vice president and commissioner on transport Siim Kallas says.

Kallas, who spoke in the south Estonian city Tartu on Friday, said in his remarks to the evening news of ERR public television that it was up to the government to decide about giving money to keep Estonian Air alive.

"If supporting the existence of a company like this is consistent with rules, then I think it's a good idea," Kallas said.

The Commission vice president would not predict whether or not Estonia could face a fine for the support extended to the airline, saying that an inquiry will be conducted in accordance with valid procedures and making the decision is up to the European directorate general on competition and the commissioner responsible for competition.

Kallas added however that various parties were keeping a close eye on developments related to individual airlines.

"The decision in principle was made back in 1994 that all airlines in Europe must operate in accordance with common rules. Competitors for sure will be looking and seeing to it that the rules were adhered to," he said.
