The state-owned energy group Eesti Energia held in the first quarter an average 71 percent of the electricity market in Estonia, 13 percent in Latvia and 8 percent in Lithuania.

Eesti Energia's share of the whole Baltic electricity market was around 31 percent, the company said.

The group sold in the three months 1.9 terawatt-hours of electricity on the Baltic retail market, which is 14 percent less than the year before, sales on the Estonian closed market in the first quarter of 2012 included.

First-quarter sales of Eesti Energia totaled 3.5 TWh, 37.4 percent more than during the same period last year. After the opening of the last retail market segment in Estonia on January 1 this year, all sales were conducted at market prices.

Sales to power exchanges and wholesalers amounted to 1.5 TWh, over five times more than in the first quarter of 2012 mainly due to favorable power generation margins.
