The government on Thursday nominated Küllike Jürimäe as candidate for the position of the Estonian judge in the European Court of Justice, Justice Minister Hanno Pevkur said.

The current Estonian judge in the Court of Justice, Uno Lõhmus, has said he would like to resign at the beginning of October this year.

Jürimäe is judge in the General Court of the European Union since 2004. A graduate of the University of Tartu and the Estonian School of Diplomacy, Jurimae worked at the prosecutor's office from 1986-1991, as legal counselor from 1991-1993, and in the Tallinn appeals court from 1993-2003.

Three candidates entered the competition to fill the position of the Estonian judge. The candidate was chosen by a commission and presented to the government for endorsement by the foreign minister in conjunction with the minister of justice, after hearing the opinions of the chairman of the Supreme Court, the chancellor of justice and the state secretary.

Judges are appointed to the European Court of Justice for a six-year term. Lohmus was first appointed to the job from May 11, 2004, and the government appointed him for a second term on Jan. 22, 2009.

The European Court of Justice is composed of one judge per member state.
