Minister of Finance Jürgen Ligi acknowledged that the city of Tallinn’s free transport has – surprisingly – been a success. It could, perhaps, even be considered a prudent idea, said the minister.

«I’d like to mention one thing that is well even outside the government… actually, the free public transport has been surprisingly successful; quite frankly, I never believed anything like this would come out of that kind of nonsense. At the moment, it seems there is more freedom to move about. It feels like people are more inclined to use public transport. Maybe it’s not too high a price and maybe it’s even prudent. Provided, of course, that they are able to make investments,» said Mr Ligi at Foorum, a programme at Estonian public TV.

He added, however, that he has no faith in the sustainability of Tallinn’s budget, seeing how many unreasonable things are being done.

«If you just give up income, and are not able to invest, that’s a temporary thing,» said Mr Ligi.
