The volume of Estonian environmental investments in the next budget period of the European Union is 600 million euros, including 100 million euros for conservancy, Minister of Environment Keit Pentus-Rosimannus said on Friday.

The ministers of environment of the Baltic countries gathered in Dikli, Latvia on Friday to discuss the environmental investments of the next European Union budget period. The priorities of the three countries are quite similar, although Latvia and Lithuania put a bigger emphasis on waste and water investments in their plans, whereas Estonia has already done a big part of the work in these areas, spokespeople for the Ministry of Environment in Tallinn said.

"Estonia will primarily emphasize conservancy, efficient and economical management of resources and reducing the ecological footprint of companies," Pentus-Rosimannus said.

In addition to the budget, the ministers also talked about waste and efficient management of resources. "I was happy to see that Latvia is following in Estonia's footsteps and is starting to implement the deposit system for packaging which has justified itself here. For example, 63 percent of packaging in Estonia was put back into the cycle in 2011, which is a great result," said the minister.

The ministers of environment of the Baltic states traditionally meet in every June. In 2014 the meeting will be held in Estonia.
