The European Group for Blood and Marrow Transplantation (EBMT) has given its award for lifetime achievement in bone marrow transplantation to University of Tartu professor of hematology and oncology Hele Everaus.

The EBMT board gave the group's Clinical Service Award to Everaus in recognition of an outstanding lifetime achievement in bone marrow transplantation and contribution to the advancement of the field both in Estonia and abroad, spokespeople for the university said.
"The Society is very proud to acknowledge professor Everaus for her achievements in the advancement of hematology and hematopoietic stem cell transplantation and, in particular, her enormous contribution not only to Estonia, but also to the global field, which has helped to save the lives of many patients and also for her major contribution to the training of her colleagues and young medical doctors," said J. Alejandro Madrigal, president of EBMT.
Professor Everaus' principal fields of research are the use of stem cells for the treatment of blood diseases and tumors, ethical aspects of transplantation and new technologies and the possibilities of immunotherapy in the treatment of malignant tumors.
Everaus is the head of the hematology and oncology clinic of Tartu University Hospital. The award will be presented to her at the EBMT annual meeting in London in April.
The EBMT is a nonprofit established in 1974 to advance clinical bone marrow transplantation. It has more than 4,000 members worldwide.
