Inaki Sandoval Campillo from Spain was on Friday elected new head of the Viljandi Culture Academy of the University of Tartu subject to endorsement by the rector of the university.

The new director of the academy will take office on Sept. 1, chair of the election committee told BNS. Sandoval currently works at the Liceu Conservatory in Barcelona as head of the jazz department and dean of master's studies. He is one of the leading jazz pianists of the Spanish music scene as witnessed by his numerous concerts and albums.

Sandoval was chosen by a 25-strong election committee consisting of members of the institution's council and advisory board.

The outcome of the first vote held in mid-June, which awarded the position to rival candidate Garri Raagmaa, was not confirmed by the rector of the university due to confusing election rules which also were inconsistent with the academy's statutes.

The term of office of current director Anzori Barkalaja ends on Aug. 31.
