Responding to request by finance minister, Tax and Custom Board director-general Marek Helm today withdrew his quit slip filed last week.

As affirmed to Mr Helm today by finance minister Maris Lauri, she desires for him to stay on the job in order to conclude several vital initiatives with participants involved, stated the ministry.

«On the one hand, Marek Helm has been under heightened scrutiny and pressure, but during these past days there have also been lots of statements in his support, assuring us that Tax and Customs Board has, under the leadership of Mr Helm, achieved a good contact with entrepreneurial organisations. Also testifying of a good job are the improved tax revenues,» said Ms Lauri. «Therefore, I proposed that Mr Helm withdraw his application, to which he also agreed. Effective tax collection is in the interests of Estonian society.»

Ms Lauri and Mr Helm also discussed the problems leading up to the application and possible solutions thereof. «Lots of problems fell onto brief period of time; I understand the concerns of entrepreneurs and also the criticism related to that which partially befell the [tax] board,» noted Ms Lauri. «We desire for the work to continue in good will and peace, and for Tax and Custom Board to function, and that in cooperation with the ministry, the board, and the entrepreneurs we would find the solutions to develop a business environment conducive to fair competition.»
