Estonia's Ambassador to Canada Gita Kalmet on Tuesday presented her credentials to Governor General David Johnston in Ottawa.

The Ottawa-based Kalmet is the first resident ambassador of Estonia to Canada, the Foreign Ministry said.

After the presentation of the credentials Johnston and Kalmet spoke about President Toomas Hendrik Ilves' visit to Canada in May. Kalmet repeated an invitation for the governor general to visit Estonia.

Johnston acknowledged the role of Estonian Canadians in growing mutual understanding and was pleased to observe that Estonia has raised the level of its diplomatic representation in Canada.

Canada's possible participation in the Tallinn-based NATO cyber defense center, pilot projects in the field of information technology and intensification of bilateral relations were some of the other topics discussed.

Kalmet joined the foreign service in 1993. She worked at the Estonian embassy in Paris in 1999-2002 and thereafter headed the EU general affairs division of the Foreign Ministry's department of Europe and transatlantic cooperation. In 2006 she was appointed ambassador to the Netherlands. Beginning from fall 2011 Kalmet worked as director general of the ministry's public diplomacy department.
