Ene Ergma to continue as speaker of Estonian parliament

Ene Ergma from Pro Patria and Res Publica Union (IRL) was reelected speaker of the Estonian parliament on Thursday.

Ergma collected 81 votes in the secret ballot. Thirteen members of the 101-strong chamber voted against and six ballot papers were invalid.

Ergma who has served as speaker of the Riigikogu for the last nine years was the sole candidate for the post.

Estonian lawmakers reelected Laine Randjärv and Jüri Ratas deputy speakers of the Riigikogu.

In the secret ballot 38 votes were cast for Randjärv, a member of the ruling Reform Party, 31 for the opposition Center Party's Ratas and 28 for Eiki Nestor, the candidate of the other opposition force Social Democratic Party. Three ballot papers were invalid.
