Saturday night, Central Criminal Police apprehended Maardu community centre director Andrei Zarenkov as accused in corruption. Also, criminal policemen took two consecutive nights to search residences and workplaces related to Mr Zarenkov.

According to police, the man is accused in accepting of gratuities as linked to acting on his official capacity. To the knowledge of Public Broadcasting (ERR), the gratuities amounted close to €1,000.

In addition to Mr Zarenkov, a man accused in granting him gratuities has also been arrested.

Preliminary investigation of the criminal case is being conducted by corruption crimes department of Central Criminal Police, as overseen by Northern District Prosecutor’s Office.

Mr Zarenkov, chairman of the former Constitution Party of Estonia and member Council for Coordination of Russian Compatriots in Estonia, has for years been of interest to the Security Police.

He has come public with sharply anti-Estonia declarations and attracted attention, a few years ago, by his desire to turn the compatriot’s council into a mass organisation standing for the rights of Russian-speaking population in Estonia.
