Three Estonian climbers killed in Peru

Three Estonian mountain climbers were killed in an avalanche near the town of Huaraz in western Peru, a fourth member of the group was found alive Peruvian media reported on Monday.

Preliminary information was that four foreign climbers including two Estonians had gone missing in the Huascaran National Park. It later turned out that all four were Estonian nationals, the local newspaper El Comercio said.

Annemai Martson, 33, was found alive and taken to a hospital in Huaraz with broken ribs, hemorrhage and dehydration.

The bodies of Tarmo, 45, Jane, 42, and Allan, 36, were found under 22 meters of snow.

The accident happened between 6 and 8 Sunday morning on Tocllaraju mountain at an altitude of about 5,900 meters above sea level.

The climbers were walking over an ice bridge which broke, causing an avalanche, head of the rescue team Alfredo Quintana Figueroa told El Comercio. This was the first accident in the region this year, he said.
