Russian border guards on Thursday detained and handed over to Estonia three Estonian men who had entered Russia by mistake while trying to return to a place where they had been fishing the day before.

On Thursday morning staff at the Estonian border guard base at Mustvee detected crossing of the temporary control line by three individuals, spokespeople for the South prefecture of the Estonian Police and Border Guard said.

Russian border guards held the three men and took them to their base at Medli. The trio were handed over to Estonia in a meeting of border representatives.

It was later revealed that the three Estonian citizens had arrived on the shore of Lake Lammijarv for two days of fishing. Unfamiliar with the area, they got lost when trying on the second day to return to the place where they had been fishing successfully the previous day.
