Estonian politician, former Tallinn mayor Hardo Aasmae dies in accident

Hardo Aasmae, Estonian politician, public person and former mayor of Tallinn, died on Monday evening at the age of 63 as a result of an accident.

Spokespeople for the North prefecture told BNS that the police got a call at 9:15 p.m. saying that Aasmae had fallen down the stairs in an apartment building in central Tallinn. He died on site. «The police have not opened a proceeding since facts point to an accident,» spokespeople added.

Aasmae was an Estonian geographer, entrepreneur and politician. He was active in the Estonian Popular Front and was the first post-Soviet mayor of Tallinn.

From 2002 to 2011 he was the chief editor of the Estonian Encyclopaedia Publishers.

He produced many radio shows and was a member of the cast of the popular radio programme «Mnemoturniir».

In previous local elections he was the Tallinn mayoral candidate of the electoral alliance Vaba Tallinna Kodanik (Free Citizen of Tallinn).

In elections to the European Parliament he received 2,193 votes but was not elected to the parliament.
