According to Statistics Estonia, more than 200,000 tourists used the services of accommodation establishments in April 2014. The number of foreign tourists increased by 11% and that of domestic tourists by 5% compared to April of the previous year.
Number of tourists using the services of accommodation establishments increased
In April, 139,000 foreign tourists stayed in accommodation establishments or 13,000 foreign tourists more than in April 2013. More than half of the foreign tourists arrived from Finland, 13% from Russia and 5% from Latvia. More tourists from Latvia and Finland stayed in accommodation establishments than in April of the previous year. The number of Russian tourists fell for the second month in succession compared to the same month of the previous year. Nearly a quarter more tourists from Germany used the services of accommodation establishments, the number of tourists from Sweden remained at the previous year's level. The number of tourists arriving from Asian countries continues to increase; in April, there were 47% more tourists arriving from Asian countries than in the same month a year ago. Three-quarters of the foreign tourists who used the services of accommodation establishments stayed in the accommodation establishments of Tallinn. The following most popular destinations were Pärnu, where 8% of the foreign tourists using the services of accommodation establishments stayed, and Tartu city, which accounted for 5% of the accommodated foreign tourists.
In April, 70,000 domestic tourists stayed in accommodation establishments, which was 5% more than in April of the previous year. 31% of the domestic tourists using the services of accommodation establishments stayed in Harju county, 13% in both Pärnu and Tartu counties and 10% in Ida-Viru county. 54% of the domestic tourists were on a holiday trip and a third on a business trip.
In April, 919 accommodation establishments offered services for tourists. 18,000 rooms and 41,000 beds were available for tourists. 40 accommodation establishments with 332 rooms and 1,264 beds were added compared to April of the previous year. The room occupancy rate was 39% and the bed occupancy rate was 32%. The average cost of a guest night was 33 euros, being one euro more expensive than in April 2013. The average cost of a guest night was higher than the Estonian average only in Harju and Lääne-Viru counties.
