An agreement on financing of a project for the reconstruction of the border checkpoints of Narva and the neighboring Russian town Ivangorod worth 8.2 million euros, to be carried out within the framework of an Estonian-Latvian-Russian cooperation program, was signed on Thursday.

«As a result of the project the throughput capacity of the border checkpoint will increase by half, which is a big step forward from the viewpoint on the development of the region and the whole Estonian economy,» Estonia's Regional Affairs Minister Siim Kiisler said in remarks released through spokespeople. The goal of the project that has been prepared during two and a half years is to reconstruct the checkpoints of Narva and Ivangorod to improve their throughput capacity.

Work will start next year and must be completed by the end of the year.

The designs for the reconstruction are being drawn up by the company AS Amhold, winner of a public procurement tender.
