A man in Tartu who was at home alone with his small child shot himself, leaving the two-year-old to its fate.

The tragic story began to unravel after the South prefecture of the police received a call from a worried resident of Tartu at around 7 p.m. on Thursday. The caller told the police that a small child had been sitting on the windowsill in an apartment house in Kaunase puiestee for the whole day and it seemed that the child had been left without supervision.

The patrol sent to the scene found in one of the rooms of the apartment the body of a 56-year-old man with a gunshot wound and a weapon lying next to him. "The evidence collected on the scene points at this having been a suicide. Neighbors said they had last seen the man two days ago," a spokesperson for the police said.

The child was taken to a hospital, it is in good health.

The police got in touch with the child's mother and also informed a social worker about what had happened. "The claims spreading in the media that a bomb threat was made to the apartment block or that a double murder occurred in Tartu are not true," the spokesperson added.
