Cornerstone of memorial to victims of Communism laid at Maarjame in Tallinn

The cornerstone for the memorial to victims of Communism and officers to be built at Maarjamae in Tallinn, the memorial to be completed by fall 2018 will cost approximately 6.6 million euros.

The area where the memorial is to be built is situated at Maarjamae, Tallinn, between the districts of Kadriorg and Pirita. Inscribed at the memorial will be the names of approximately 28,000 people who lost their lives as a result of the actions of the communist regime, many of whom died far from home and were buried in graves the location of which is not known.

The memorial which is to be built on an area of nearly 30,000 square meters will be ready by the fall of 2018. The memorial will be built by OU Tafrix, Graniittirakennus Kallio Oy, Verston Ehitus OU and GRK Infra AS. The construction is to cost 6.6 million euros, exclusive of VAT. The project is to be financed by the foundation Eesti Represseeritute Abistamise Fond and the state budget.

The initial planned cost of the construction was 4.5 million euros.

Authors of the winning design, which was chosen from 12 designs, are Kalle Vellevoog, Jaan Tiidemann, Tiiu Truus, Martin Prommik and Lidia Zarudnaja from Arhitektuuriburoo JVR OU. The memorial to be built based on the design consists of two parts -- "the journey" and "the home garden". To reach the home garden, one has to embark on a journey. To embark on a journey, one has to leave the home garden, it is written in the description of the design.
