Editorial: can we win the war of the can?

To the headache of Estonian packaging system, beer bottles purchased in Latvia and emptied in Estonia can be returned for money that the buyer never paid. 

And are about to overwhelm the system we love for keeping our country tidy. 

Over the decade the system has been working, we the people have gotten used to use the automated return arrangement and have enjoyed the outcome.

Unlike in times past, the parks and waysides are no longer littered with the plastic bottles and the glittering ugliness of discarded cans.

So, in order to keep the good system going, let us be watchful and flexible. Keep altering the arrangement as the need arises.

Where there’s a will, there’s a way.

And, as has someone somewhere has encouragingly uttered: «Yes, we can!»
