Mid-January, Pärnu County Court convicted Erki Osa (38) in unauthorized use of car, drunk driving, as well as for keeping a woman he knew in his apartment to beat her and torture with electricity.

While the embezzlement and drunk driving happened at end of last year, the deprivation of liberty and physical abuse date back to summer 20013. The woman said Mr Osa invited her over into the apartment of her father in Haapsalu where Mr Osa lived for a time. Mr Osa invited her claiming he wished to pay a debt by then amounting to €3,000. Earlier, the man and the woman had been in a romantic relationship.

As she arrived in the apartment, Mr Osa was there alone. «Erki let me in and was visibly drunk. Erki begun to accuse me in all sorts of things,» she later explained to police. What exactly the accusations were about, she did not remember but the main thing was she no longer wanted to be with him.

As the woman had enough of the accusations and was increasingly disturbed by the ever more intoxicated man, she decided to leave the apartment. Mr Osa, however, blocked her way and hid the key in his pants pocket.

The quarrel eventually came to Mr Osa hitting her in the face. Thereafter, he grabbed a broom and beat the woman with that. Finally, he reached for an electric cord and proceeded to administer electric shocks. Due to being in shock, she fails to recall what kind of cord it was. The man claims to have been too drunk to remember, but did not refute the act in court.

The woman had to endure the ill-treatment till the night fell and Mr Osa sink into a drunken sleep. Then She could get the key from his pocket and head home to her mother. «As she came home in the morning, her face was all swollen and a lip broken. She had big blue marks on her body,» the mother later told the police. The injuries were also registered in the hospital.

Being in love with Mr Osa, the woman initially decided not to inform the police. However, running into Mr Osa accidentally in the street afterwards, the man tried to drag her into a cellar from where she managed to escape.

For the physical abuse and later crimes, the court sentenced Mr Osa to be jailed for a year with 18 month of probation.
