On Wednesday rescuers had to evacuate 124 children from a kindergarten in Estonia's Harju County because chemical contamination occurred in a maintenance room as a result of one employee's mistake and the prosecutor's office launched a criminal investigation.

The rescue center got a call notifying about the contamination in Saue at 11:33 a.m. when it was discovered that poisonous gases filled the pool's maintenance room. A worker accidentally poured sulphuric acid on sodium hypochlorite that was in a canister and as a result gas fumes occurred. The employee took the canister quickly out of the building but gas fumes spread to the building's corridors, spokespeople for the rescue center for North Estonia said.

Kindergarten employees took all 124 children outside the house and none of them or the 19 employees was hurt.

The prosecutor's office launched a criminal investigation.
