In central Tartu, right behind Town Hall in Pirogov Park, a motley crew gathered last night to demand legalisation of cannabis. The demonstration «Stop Destructive Cannabis Ban Policy!» was organised by non-profit association Estonian Cannabis Union (MTÜ Eesti Kanepiliit). At the protest meeting, its board members Madis Masing (large picture) and Mart Kalvet – to the soundtrack of supporting shouts – lectured on the benefits of cannabis and listed reasons for allowing its use.

To support their views, the demonstrators claimed that in the absence of cannabis ban users wouldn’t have to hand their money to criminals; pure weed might be purchased; ranks of alcohol consumers would be thinned; stress levels would come down, as a result of which crime would decidedly decline as well as domestic violence. Also: tax revenues would go up, economy would get a perk, and prosperity would advance.

From Pirogov Park, the demonstrators in procession marched on to special/open people’s subculture club Genialistide Klubi.
