Last night, a tram was spotted sliding down Laagna Road, Tallinn aka Lasnamäe Channel – on board of two vehicles as carried towards the city centre.

Explaining the mystery: the new tram that arrived by ship at Paldiski Harbour was being taken to the Pärnu Highway depot along a wide bypass of Tallinn Circle and Laagna Road and onwards through the city centre to former House of Journalism where the tram was assembled and hauled into the depot by a mighty manoeuvring machine.

There is a better beeline from Paldiski to depot. However, that would have been over the Pärnu Highway viaduct which, alas, sets a 30 tonne weight limit. The trip was a smooth success except for a brief stop on the Viru Roundabout. Unexpectedly, it was detected that the tram overhead line hung lower than prescribed.

Ready and awaiting at the depot, there stood the Spanish specialists to promptly get busy adjusting and attuning the tram.

Today, the tram was presented to the public. Come New Year, the vehicle will probably be seen doing its test driving on Tallinn rails.
