The government on Thursday approved an agreement under which Estonia will build new headquarters for the European Union's IT agency in Tallinn at a cost of 8.4 million euros.

The government today endorsed and authorized Interior Minister Hanno Pevkur to sign an agreement between Estonia and eu-LISA, the EU agency for the operational management of large-scale IT systems in the area of freedom, security and justice, according to which the headquarters of the agency will be built in Tallinn, spokespeople for the Interior Ministry said. The agreement also sets out the rights of the agency's employees.

Estonia pledges to build offices for up to 100 employees and put the office complex at the agency's disposal for free. The office complex should be completed by December 2017 at the latest. Estonia's budget strategy 2014-2017 earmarks 8.4 million euros for the construction.

Employees of the agency will in accordance with international practice have equal status and immunity with diplomatic staff. Immigration restrictions will not be applied to them and their family members.

The government's communication office said the IT agency will be exempted from all taxes like diplomatic representations.
