The General Synod of the Estonian Evangelical Lutheran Church on Wednesday elected Urmas Viilma the new head of the church.

The new archbishop was elected in two rounds, spokespeople said. Of the four candidates Ove Sander and Viilma advanced to the second round where the 57-member church council voted for Viilma.

Viilma will be installed as head of the Lutheran church on Feb. 2 next year. Until then bishop Einar Soone will perform the duties of archbishop.

Archbishop Andres Poder retired on Saturday upon turning 65 as required by church laws.
