Estonian President Toomas Hendrik Ilves called Latvian Foreign Minister Edgars Rinkevics who came out as gay on his Twitter account on Thursday evening «very brave».

«A very brave man and a very good foreign minister,» Ilves commented on the minister's announcement.

Rinkevics announced on Thursday evening that he is gay. «I proudly announce I'am gay... Good luck all of you...,» Rinkevics said in his Twitter post.

The Latvian Foreign Ministry on Friday confirmed that the minister's Twitter post was authentic.

Latvia's LGBT rights group Mozaika thanked Rinkevics for his courage admitting that he is gay. Mozaika in its Twitter post thanked the minister for making this «historic step towards an open, diverse and better Latvia».

Rinkevics is a member of the ruling Unity party and has been foreign minister since October 2011.
