On Friday, as part of the Wrocław Global Forum, President Ilves was awarded the Atlantic Council's Freedom Award in recognition of his role in standing up for democratic values in Europe, protecting personal liberties and promoting Europe-US relationships.

The Freedom Award was also given to the European Union's Foreign Policy leader, Catherine Ashton (High Representative of the Union for Foreign Affairs and Security Policy), former prime minister of Hungary Miklós Németh and Polish diplomat Jerzy Koźmiński; the award will be accepted on behalf of the Maidan freedom fighters by the Mayor of Kiev, Vitali Klitschko, and Ukrainians Ruslana and Igor Lutsenko.
