«Poland will never stand alone! Estonia will never stand alone! Latvia will never stand alone! Lithuania will never stand alone! Romania will never stand alone!» US President Barack Obama said in Warsaw, yesterday.

In Poland on a state visit, Mr Obama underlined NATO alliance as cornerstone for European security and promised to defend Eastern European states from a possible aggressor at any cost.

«As allies, we have a solemn duty – a binding treaty obligation – to defend your territorial integrity. And we will,» said Mr Obama in his statement in Warsaw.

As a confirmation of the vow, White House says it stands ready to allocate a billion dollars (€734m) for rotation of US army units launched to Eastern Europe. The President’s initiative needs approval by the Congress.

Also present in Warsaw was Ukraine’s incoming President Petro Porošenko, who also had a meeting with Mr Obama. At a press conference, Mr Obama noted that Mr Porošenko’s election expresses Ukrainians’ longing to live in peace and independence.

The Warsaw summit featured heads of Eastern European states including President of Estonia Toomas Hendrik Ilves.
