Estonia's new Ambassador to Romania Eerik Marmei presented his credentials to President Traian Basescu in Bucharest on Wednesday.

In the subsequent conversation Marmei and Basescu talked about bilateral relations and cooperation within NATO, the European Union and other international organizations, spokespeople for the Estonian Foreign Ministry said. The two also discussed the Estonian president's forthcoming visit to Romania, the two countries' economic ties, the EU's Eastern Partnership program and NATO's missile and cyber defense.

The ambassador conveyed President Toomas Hendrik Ilves' and the Estonian government's greetings to the Romanian head of state.

Marmei, 43, holds a master's degree in international relations from the University of Notre Dame. He has been working at the Foreign Ministry since 1993, heading the U.S. desk of the political department, serving as director of the international organizations and security bureau, and working at the Estonian representation to NATO in 1998-2000. In 2000-2003 Marmei worked at the Estonian embassy in Washington and thereafter for three years at the embassy in London.

In 2008-2010 Marmei was head of the Foreign Ministry's NATO and EU department and since 2010, director of the ministry's division for security policy and arms control.

Since September 2013 Marmei heads the Estonian diplomatic representation in Poland. He resides in Warsaw.
