Universities need to become more international.

Former rector of the University of Tartu Alar Karis says in an interview that Estonian universities should take care not to let quality of tuition slip and that he believes that if a small country wants to be successful in this day and age, its people need to speak several languages and so must its universities. Karis says that professors should work abroad for at least a few months every five years and that those who want to teach international curricula should pass a language and culture test, following the example of Denmark. The former rector adds that he is not worried about the future of the Estonian language and culture and that paradoxically it could be high quality English education that will help us preserve them, provided it is able to motivate young people to learn international subjects at home.
