The Estonian ferry company Vainamere Liinid on Sunday carried a record number of 1,227 vehicles between the mainland and Hiiumaa Island, spokespeople for the company said on Monday.

According to manager of the company Urmas Treiel it is the biggest number of vehicles the company has carried in a day on the line between the ports of Rohukula and Heltermaa. «While the ships Hiiumaa and Regula were able to carry over 1,227 vehicles with a waiting period of four hours, the two previous ships were only able to service a record of 881 vehicles a day and with a waiting time of seven to eight hours. We have gotten a lot of feedback from the organizers of events taking place on Hiiumaa Island as well as from travelers who have thanked us for a smooth travel,» Treiel said.

In Treiel's words the reason behind the record was the number of big events taking place on the Estonia's second largest island this weekend but he added that interest in traveling to Hiiumaa is generally very high and constantly increasing.

The last record for servicing vehicles between Heltermaa and Rohukula ports originates from the same weekend a year ago when the company carried 1,208 vehicles in one day. Vainamere Liinid is a subsidized company and is also the only company that offers transportation services between Estonia's two biggest islands and the mainland.
