In the first seven months of this year 28 people lost their lives in Estonia through drowning which is the same number as last year.

The number of drowning accidents was the highest in July at 10, it appears from figures provided by the Rescue Board. Seven people drowned in May, five in June, two in January and February each, and one in March and April each.

The number of drowning deaths usually jumps in summer months, peaking in June or July. During this period most of the victims are men aged 20-29 and a common factor in most cases is alcohol. In spite of people being aware of the dangers of going swimming drunk, their judgment is weakened by alcohol and they go into water to refresh themselves, swim or test their strength.
