Attempts to cross the Estonian border with false documents have markedly increased this year whereas sneaking across the border remains at the previous year's level.

Border officials detected 72 forged documents in the first half of this year, 29 more than the year before, data of the Police and Border Guard Board show. Attempts to cross the border with documents that belonged to someone else numbered 12, seven more than in the same period of the previous year.

Illegal border crossings in the territory between checkpoints numbered 116, three fewer than in the January-June period of 2012. Most offenders were citizens of Estonia or Russia, spokespeople for the Police and Border Guard Board said.
