The number of asylum applications stayed at the same level as last year in the first six months of 2013.

Vietnamese nationals are at the top of this year's list of asylum-seekers with 24 applicants, citizens of Pakistan and Russia follow with respectively seven and six applications, data of the Estonian Police and Border Guard Board show. Estonia has received a total of 54 applications this year, four fewer than during the same period in 2012.

In the first six months of 2013 applications were also received from four citizens of Georgia, three citizens of Albania, two nationals of Iran, and from one citizen of Afghanistan, Australia, Croatia, Syria, Tunisia, Turkey, the US and Belarus each, spokespeople for the board told BNS.

This year two individuals -- a citizen of Afghanistan and a citizen of Russia -- have been given asylum. Last year Estonia granted asylum to eight individuals, including six in the first six months.
