Estonian President Toomas Hendrik Ilves has sent his congratulations to U.S. President Barack Obama on the occasion of the Independence Day of the United States of America, July 4.

The United States of America has remained true to the principles that were written into the Declaration of Independence in 1776 and this has helped the U.S.A. to be the flagship of democracy, human rights and human values through the centuries, the Estonian head of state said.
The president said he was glad that July 4 was celebrated also by tens of thousands of Estonians for whom the United States has become new home and Estonia remained the land of fathers and grandfathers. Estonia will forever remain grateful to the United States for its giving shelter and the opportunity to start a new life to thousands of Estonians who were forced to flee Communism, the Estonian president said in his message.
Ilves also recalled the words of President Barack Obama according to which America will remain the anchor of strong alliances and described America's contribution to the development of transatlatic relations and promotion of peace and democracy as important, the president's press office in Tallinn said.
