The surface median point for the Estonian population lies in Aruvalla village situated 26 kilometers to the southeast of the capital Tallinn in the Rae rural municipality of Harju County, according to the results of the 2011 Population and Housing Census.

Based on data garnered in the previous census in 2000, the surface median point, or the point of minimum aggregate travel, lay in Kantkula village in the territory of the Koue municipality also in Harju County.

The moving of the median point by roughly 20 kilometers between the two censuses indicates an increase in the share of the population of Tallinn in the country's overall population, Berit Hanilane, lead specialist at Statistics Estonia, said in the blog of the statistical office.

She said that, for instance, based on the mean center of population it would be fair to hold the all-Estonian song festival not at the Song Festival Ground in Tallinn but 26 kilometers south of the capital instead.
