Estonian border guard chief gets appointment as specialized diplomat to Russia

Tonu Hunt, who previously worked as deputy director general of the Estonian Police and Border Guard Board in the field of border guard, will become the new counsellor of internal security at the Estonian embassy in Moscow.

Hunt was chosen for the specialized diplomat position in a public competition from 39 candidates, the chancellor for the Ministry of Interior, Leif Kalev, said. «Judging by previous work experience and position, Tonu Hunt was the strongest candidate,» said Kalev. Hunt has worked at the Border Guard since its establishment 22 years ago and has worked his way up in the organization to the position of deputy director general in charge of border guard.

Hunt will become the new domestic security and regional cooperation adviser at the Estonian embassy in Moscow in the next few months. His tasks will be to coordinate the cooperation of Estonia and Russia in the field of domestic security and regional cooperation, to represent Estonia in these matters in Russia and also in other countries in the Commonwealth of Independent States, to monitor the fulfilment of agreements between the two states and to advise other government institutions in the promotion of cooperation with Russia. He will also cooperate with the representatives of the European Union member states and international organizations in Russia.

The current counsellor of internal security in Moscow is Rein Orav whose term of office will end on July 31.
