The Illuka rural municipality in northeastern Estonia and Russia's Slantsy district plan to join forces to build another bridge over the border river Narva in addition to the existing one.

Leaders of Illuka and Slantsy mulled opportunities for cooperation between the neighboring regions in February and the first idea was to create another permanent connection between Estonia and Russia across Narva River, said the government of East-Viru County to which Illuka belongs. There has been talk about the possibility of building a bridge between Permiskula on the Estonian side and Zagrivye in Russia where a bridge existed less than one hundred years ago.

"If the bridge in Narva can be regarded as the main gate between Estonia and Russia, then the planned bridge in Permiskula could be called a wicket gate. Restoring the bridge will improve relations between the two countries and give a considerable boost to economic activity of the border regions," Illuka mayor Oleg Kuznetsov said.
