At a meeting in Tallinn with representatives of the “Let’s Do It!” movement, Foreign Minister Urmas Paet said that the Foreign Ministry supports introducing and sharing the experiences of the “Let’s Do It!” trash cleanup campaign globally. “The trash cleanup campaign is an exciting example of civic initiatives and of taking a step towards implementing the principles of sustainable development,” he stated.

Paet said that Estonia’s environment has benefited greatly from the “Let’s Do It!” initiative. “The civic initiative project that got its start in Estonia in 2008 has set a practical example for many other countries. The project has become global – last year volunteer cleanup events were held in 70 countries,” he added.

In April, cleanup events within the framework of the global cleanup campaign took place in India, Canada, Uganda, Lebanon, Greece, Croatia, Ukraine, Mongolia, Sweden, Spain, Bulgaria, and Latvia. “In June of last year we worked together to introduce the ‘Let’s Do It!’ cleanup campaign in Brazil during the UN Sustainable Development Conference Rio+20,” said Paet. “We would like to continue with similar co-operation in the future,” he confirmed.

Paet said that another example of good co-operation is the organising of a “Let’s Do It!” exhibit at the UN’s headquarters in Geneva from 27 May-14 June 2013. Its opening will also be a celebration of the 6th anniversary of this civic initiative. The exhibit was created through the co-operation of the Foreign Ministry, the Ministry of the Environment, and the “Let’s Do It!” team. It includes photographs from “Let’s Do It!” projects that have been held in various parts of the world, as well as video clips that introduce the project. During the period that the exhibit is on display the 23rd session of the UN Human Rights Council, the World Health Assembly of the WHO, and a conference of the International Labour Organisation (ILO) will take place.
