The use of automated terminals for the delivery of parcels in Estonia has doubled over the last two years, a survey by TNS Emor shows.

The study found that while in December 2010 only 14 percent of all parcels were delivered through a parcel terminal, by January this year the figure had risen to 27 percent. Estonians receive an average of five parcels a year but the use of parcel terminals differs by regions.

People living in the countryside receive more and residents of the capital Tallinn, fewer parcels than the average. While Tallinners get an average 3.4 parcels a year, residents of small towns and villages receive 6.1 parcels on the average.

According to parcel traffic data of Itella Smartpost the number of recipients is the biggest in the three largest counties - Harju which includes the capital Tallinn, Tartu and Pärnu. Inhabitants of the three counties receive slightly more than half of all the parcels sent through Smartpost.

Smartpost has parcel terminals in all Estonian counties. The company said its market share in delivery through parcel terminals was 42 percent in January, having doubled in the last two years.

Smartpost is part of the Finnish Itella group, a provider of goods and information logistics solutions with operations in northern and central Europe and in Russia.
