The level of water in Emajogi River that bisects Estonia's second-largest city of Tartu had risen to 252 centimeters above point zero by Tuesday but is expected to start subsiding towards the end of the week.

Water rose above the 239 centimeter level considered to be critical early on Sunday, had reached 246 centimeters by Monday morning and stood at 252 centimeters Tuesday noon.

During the last 24 hours the water level rose by less than five centimeters, head of the municipal economy department Rein Haak told BNS observing that the maximum forecast is 280 centimeters. Water levels are falling in all rivers feeding into Emajogi and unless the next few days bring heavy rainfalls waters of Emajogi are bound to start subsiding at the end of the week, he said.

Pumping to remove floodwater is in progress in the lowlying Liiva Street area but water has not caused problems elsewhere.

"That's a tidy spring flood that is causing minor problems in a few places, but most people don't even notice it," Haak said.

According to the Meteorological and Hydrological Institute, river floods that started in Estonia on April 13 are receding and Emajogi is the only river where water level is still rising.
