Every year, tens of thousands of frogs are flattened by vehicle wheels as their trips to spawning places cross highways. With warm weather finally here, the frogs are on the move, says Estonian Fund for Nature (ELF).

According to fresh intelligence data, largest troops of amphibians have been spotted on Piibe Highway, in the Tammiku migration spot. The Northernmost corner of Lake Võrtsjärv also features areas where ancient frog paths cross the contemporary highways – it is here, among other areas, that ELF organised frog bee (talgud), last spring.

The main bee engine Paul Hunt underlines that, at last year’s frog bees, held at various places around the land, 10,851 frogs were assisted across the highways.

This year, frog bees will be repeated. Five locations have been selected, based on information from drivers and other nature lovers. The info was collected by Environmental Board and ELF.

The bee sites include: Leie–Oiu section on Tartu–Viljandi Highway, Jägala junction on Tallinn–Narva Highway, Piibe Highway at Jägala and Aegviidu, and Kiisa small town in Harju County.
