Friday's meeting between the Estonian and Russian prime ministers in St. Petersburg was friendly and the two conversed in Russian, Russian news agency Interfax said.

Russian Prime Minister Dmitry Medvedev thanked the Estonian head of government, Andrus Ansip, for taking part in the Council of the Baltic Sea States summit and Ansip thanked his Russian colleague for excellent organization of the meeting, the agency said.

"It is extremely important to us - to Estonia, Russia and all the countries of the region - to safeguard our Baltic Sea. In this sense the meeting was a great success," Ansip was quoted as saying by Interfax. The agency also quoted Medvedev in whose words the possibility to discuss Estonian-Russian relations now exists.

The agency underlined that the prime ministers conversed in Russian.

Ansip said in his address to the environment-themed summit of Baltic Sea states that it is the common goal and duty of all countries on the Baltic rim to protect the environment around and within the Baltic Sea. The problems related to the Baltic Sea can be solved only by a joint effort of all the countries surrounding the sea and in cooperation of the public and private sectors, he stated.
