Direct talks between Israel and Palestine are the only way to peace in the Middle East, Estonian Foreign Minister Urmas Paet said in a meeting with the head of the mission of the Palestinian Authority, Nabil Al Waziri, in Tallinn on Thursday.

"The Palestinian people have the right to statehood and the people of Israel have the right to live next to Palestine in peace and security," Paet said according to spokespeople. "Only a negotiated solution can bring lasting peace," he said.

The Estonian minister and the head of the mission of the Palestinian Authority talked also about bilateral relations. In the words of Paet, relations between Estonia and the Palestinian Authority have been very good. "We hope to hold political consultations in the fall," said Paet.

In recent years Estonia has helped to contribute to the building of the Palestinian state through implementation of elements of e-government. "A project is about to be completed soon for enhancing the digital security capability of the Palestinian Authority," Paet added.

Estonia also supports the activities of the United Nations Relief and Works Agency for Palestine Refugees in the Near East (UNRWA) with 50,000 euros this year.
