Estonia's position is that the joint venture for the development of the Rail Baltic high-speed rail link should be established as soon as possible, Minister of Economic Affairs and Communications Juhan Parts said on Thursday.

"The joint venture should be the developer of the project and later on manager and operator of the railway," Parts said at the government's press conference.

Consultations between the three Baltic states on founding the joint venture are set to begin next month, with the first meeting at ministers' level at which Parts will present Estonia's position to his colleagues scheduled for April 12.

Parts said the joint venture could be in existence at the earliest this fall. In the Estonian government's view the Latvian capital Riga is the best location for the company.
