According to preliminary information the teenaged girl whose body was found in Tamsalu, northern Estonia on Friday morning had been tortured before being stabbed to death and her head had been cut off, the regional newspaper Virumaa Teataja says.

The girl called Marily who was from Kuressaare, Saaremaa Island had traveled to Tamsalu to visit a boy of the same age she had met on the internet. When she called her mother on Thursday afternoon she claimed everything was all right but that was not true. She had been beaten up so severely on Monday by the boy she was visiting that an ambulance had to be called. The chief physician of the Rakvere hospital said the girl complained of pains and was kept in hospital for observation overnight.

Marily reported the beating to the police.

A brother of the siblings suspected of killing the girl, Grigori, told the paper that Marily had on Thursday asked their neighbors for money to get back home but wasn't given any. The boy, Valeri, had found out by that time that Marily had turned to the police over the beating. He eventually took the girl into the apartment of his 33-year-old sister Natalja at the other end of the house. The brother and sister took the girl from there to the health trail where they killed her. The police found a knife and an axe in a dustbin at the apartment house where the suspects, their mother and other siblings live, Grigori told the paper. He also said that reportedly the girl's hair had been shaved off which is a Russian custom before execution.

The paper asked the Viru regional prosecutor's office to corroborate the reports about the Tamsalu killing, but a spokeswoman said the prosecutor's office already has published all the information it can and further details cannot be released so as not to prejudice the investigation.

This was not Marily's first visit to Valeri. She had been returned from Tamsalu to Kuressaare where she lived with her mother by social workers of the Tamsalu municipality in November last year. According to Grigori, the girl would have preferred to live with her father but he works in Finland.
