The outbreak of an as yet undiagnosed disease at the Kuperjanov infantry battalion based in the southwestern Estonian regional capital Voru rose to 217 by Tuesday morning.
The first individuals who displayed symptoms on Monday are already getting well, military spokespeople in Tallinn said.
None of the persons quarantined have been allowed to leave quarantine. The battalion's medical center is working to establish the cause of the illness and samples from the patients have been sent to the regional medical center in Tartu. Nobody will be granted leave and no guests will be allowed into the compound pending the results of the analyses.
"All the conscripts who fell ill have been quarantined in the barracks and are being provided allround medical assistance. We are doing everything to establish the cause as quickly as possible and we will take measures to prevent similar situations in the future," said the battalion's commander, Lt. Col. Maidu Allikas.
The battalion keeps the veterinary and food authority and the national health authority updated about the situation.
The outbreak got its start on Monday when almost 40 conscripts of the Kuperjanov battalion turned to medics complaining of vomiting and diarrhea.
