A 28-year-old man on the police wanted list in Estonia was detained by border guards on Tuesday after he had crossed the border river from Russia to Estonia swimming.

Personnel on duty at the Narva-Jõesuu border guard station on Tuesday evening spotted an unidentified object moving from the Russian shore of the Narva River toward Estonia. A couple of tens of minutes later a patrol dispatched to the scene detained the man wearing a wetsuit and fins.

"The person who had crossed the border was a 28-year-old man who had been put on the wanted list by the criminal service of the police in Narva. A criminal procedure was opened based on the article of the penal code dealing with illegal crossing of the temporary control line," spokespeople for the East prefecture of the police and border guard board said.
